A Checklist for You're Upcoming Vacation | Travel & Vacation Tips & Resources

A Checklist for You’re Upcoming Vacation

Planning a trip gives you lots of stuff to think about, so it can be easy to forget a few things. Here’s a convenient checklist that will hopefully make it a little easier to remember the important things.

1. Any Required Visas and Your Passport
Your passport should always be up-to-date and you should be sure to have the appropriate visas for any countries you’re going to visit.

2. Have Your Tickets Available – Plane, Bus, Train, Etc.
Even if you’ve got e-tickets, it’s still a good idea to print out your airline tickets and other tickets, or have the pertinent information on your laptop or smart phone. That way you’ll have important information, as well as you itinerary, easily available.

3. Accommodation Reservations or Vouchers
Even if you received confirmation of your booking online, it’s smart to have the hotel information and confirmation of the booking with you.

4. Travel and Medical Insurance
Be absolutely sure that you take your travel insurance documentation with you. You don’t want to be in a difficult situation when you need them only to realize that they’re still sitting on the dresser at home.

5. Available Currency
Most of us travel with credit cards, debit cards or both. Travelers checks are still used by a few of us, as well. Nevertheless, it’s smart to have some local currency available to you, as well. Make an effort to obtain some of the local currency before you travel so you can get the best exchange rate.

6. Important Contact Information
If you booked through a travel agent, you should have their contact information with you. And, ask if they have any contacts in your destination country as well.

Make sure you have the proper contact info for your banks and credits cards. If your cards are lost or stolen, you’ll need to contact them.

7. Minimal Toiletries in Your Carry-On Luggage
We’ve all had it happen to us – lost luggage. While lost luggage is really inconvenient, the prospect of arriving at your hotel without so much as a toothbrush or deodorant can be truly unsettling.

While some hotels may have small toiletries packages for their guest, many don’t.

Reminder: Be sure to keep to the size requirements that are imposed by the airlines.

8. Cellphone
So that you are able to stay in touch while you’re traveling, consider taking your cellphone with you. Check with your service provider about coverage in the country you’re visiting and ask about any possible roaming charges.

9. Other Languages
A “universal translator” like those used in Star Trek would sure be nice. However, there are many advanced devices available right now. And, you can use a low-tech version – a comprehensive phrase book.

10. Medicines and Vaccinations
Well before your departure date, get any vaccinations that may be required for your destination country.

Be sure to take essential medications with you on your trip. Also, have the doctor’s prescription should any of these medications be questioned. A lot of countries impose harsh penalties if they suspect you of attempting to smuggle controlled substances.

11. Resist the Urge to Over-Pack
Stick to what is really necessary. Things like a bathing suit, shorts, t-shirts, a few dressy items, dress shoes and a pair of comfortable walking shoes. Select items that you can mix and match and that can be laundered along the way.

12. Reading Material
If you’ll be spending extended periods of time on planes, buses, trains, ships, etc. then take along some books, magazines or crossword puzzles.

We hope you have found this checklist valuable and that it helps you have a stress-free vacation.
