Cheaper options for getting around SE England by rail?

Elizabeth N asked:

My husband and I are planning a trip to England this summer and we are looking into taking some excursion trips from London to Stratford Upon Avon and Bath. I’ve been pricing the rail trips for this on National Rail and in comparison to what we pay for train service in the Netherlands the prices are insane. Is there a discount card or four day pass or some other value option that insiders know about that could save us travel costs on our trip?

check out the railcard website – there is a south east network card that you can buy for UK20 which gives you 1/3 off your fares. I usually buy the family railcard when I’m home in the UK for a holiday and even though I only use it for a few weeks, it is worth buying rather than paying the full fare.
