How do I get from OC to Berkeley? | Travel & Vacation Tips & Resources

How do I get from OC to Berkeley?

Fustuka asked:

I’m from WA State and am transferring to UCB this fall. I want to know how I can regularly, almost every weekend, travel from Berkeley to Orange County without a car. I heard there are trains but was wondering is that the only option, how much they cost, do they have such a long route, and if they provide student cards/discounts?
Any help would be great!

Thank you!
OMG! Thus far, I’m really grateful for all of the information. Would car be better then? :(:(

For a direct route, I’d suggest Greyhound. You catch it in Oakland. Here’s a page with info about the cities it serves (the OC is a big place):

If you take Amtrak, all your time will be spent traveling. (Every weekend? Phew.) The Coast Starlight takes forever, and the San Joaquin stops at Bakersfield, and you have to take a bus from there.

You can get a Greyhound student discount card here:

Edit: Further research shows it might be more cost effective to fly. The R/T for Greyhound is about $160. If you book flights far enough in advance, it might be a little more (about $180), but in my world, time = money.

There is a train (Coast Starlight), but it’s a very long ride (11 hours).

Amtrak also offers a combination bus/train route which is a bit shorter (San Joaquins route).

Or you could take the the bus (cashuttlebus.com) to LA and then the train (Pacific Surfliner) down to OC, which is probably the fastest option.

But I don’t think it is feasible to do this every weekend unless you fly. It will take far too much time.
