Travel around London?

answers asked:

I will be in London from the US for a week this month. I plan mostly on site seeing (which I presume would be zone 1). I am a 30 year old student with my university ID. What is the best option for me in terms of a weekly ticket to purchase. I saw terms like oyster, travel card etc. and am totally confused. Also do I need a special ID to avail student discount?

My daughter, 2 grandsons and I were in London for a week in June. We used the Oyster cards for the bus. My daughter says the tube is better, but we had a stroller so the stairs would hve been too difficult. Anyway, I had no problem at all with the bus system- they’ve got it down! Busses are on time and they go everywhere and are easy to navigate. have a great time- you’ll LOVE it!

Oyster is the electronic smart card ticket, but for overseas visitors it is only possible to use it for pay as you go (as it needs to be registered to carry a one week pass and you have to have a British address to register it) which could be an expensive option.

For you the best bet is a one week Travelcard, which is a paper ticket and which allows you to make as many journeys as you like in one day.

The zones only apply to the Tube, not buses, so a zone 1-2 travelcard (they don’t seem to sell a zone 1 only Travelcard) will give travel on Tube trains in zone 1-2 and buses anywhere in London. This would cover you for occasional trips outside zones 1-2.

The cost of a one week travelcard for zones 1-2 is £23.20. However if you think you can manage on buses alone, you can get a one week bus pass for £14.00.

I am not aware that there are any reductions available for adult students.
