Travel Immunizations: Are You Up-to-Date?

You have probably heard about the serious outbreak of Avian Flu. This is just one of many illnesses that you need to be aware of when traveling anywhere in the world. The CDC has a comprehensive page on their website that offers the latest recommended vaccinations for travelers.

Basically, these vaccinations are divided into three groups: recommended, required, and routine. Your family doctor will be able to advise you as to what vaccinations are needed depending on the destination you choose; however, you can easily check the latest information on the CDC website.

According to the CDC, recommended vaccinations are “to protect travelers from illnesses present in other parts of the world and to prevent the importation of infectious diseases across international borders. Which vaccinations you need depends on a number of factors including your destination, whether you will be spending time in rural areas, the season of the year you are traveling, your age, health status, and previous immunizations.”

Required vaccinations are those that are mandated by International Health Regulations. Presently, “yellow fever vaccination for travel to certain countries in sub-Saharan Africa and tropical South America is required. Meningococcal vaccination is required by the government of Saudi Arabia for annual travel during the Hajj.”

Routine vaccinations are “necessary for protection from diseases that are still common in many parts of the world even though they rarely occur in the United States.”

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, the CDC offers recommendations on the type of immunizations needed. This is also the case if you are traveling with infants and/or children.

Before you travel abroad or anywhere in the world, check out the CDC website to ascertain what immunizations are required. They have a page where you can search destinations by region.

Moreover, they provide information on such concerns as water and food safety, insects, and other diseases which may be currently active in certain countries.  The more you know, the better equipped you will be to choose a vacation spot that is relatively clear of any disease or problems that can affect your family’s health.
