When is the most inexpensive time to travel to Europe?

inexpensive travel
start wearing purple asked:

I’d also like to know what time is the least touristy. What locations are (fairly) safe and still inexpensive? What are some interesting things to see in these destinations?

“Europe” is a big place and it depends on what you want to do. Almost all of it is safe as long as you use very basic common sense.

However, high season for most places is during the summer (June to August), with July and August being the worst because that is when Europeans go on holiday. An obvious exception would be ski areas during winter.

For most destinations, late April to mid June and early September to mid October offer the best combination of weather, crowds, and value. Almost all attractions are open, but the summertime crowds and prices are not in place.

An example is the Croatian coast, which is packed + expensive during the summer but is still great + less expensive and much less crowded during May and September:

Please focus your question on places you might want to visit and ask again.

Winter (except for the Christmas and New Years holidays) is the least expensive time and has the fewest tourists unless you are going to a ski resort.

Nothing in Europe is inexpensive anymore if you’re an American. The dollar is near historic lows against the euro. I was there in February and I was amazed at the prices. Winter is less expensive – not inexpensive. You’ll find that smaller towns and rural areas will be more reasonable than large cities.

In general, European cities are much safer than American cities. Just use common sense. Ask at your hotel if there are areas that you should avoid. Avoid dark streets with few people. Don’t dress like a tourist and don’t carry large sums of cash. I have walked the streets of European cities for years and have never encountered anything more dangerous than an occasional pickpocket.

The list of interesting places is far longer than anyone can list here. Entire books and TV series exist on this subject. Plus, your interests may differ from mine. I suggest picking up a good guidebook at your local bookstore and doing some reading. I like Rick Steves’ books, but there are other good ones.
